 72 hours of metallized glass in salt spray cabinet: performance test and corrosion resistance analysis

Because of its unique physical and chemical properties, metallized glass has gradually become one of the important materials in the fields of electronics, automotive and aerospace in recent years. As a new amorphous metal material, metallized glass has high strength and good corrosion resistance. However, in practical applications, its salt spray corrosion resistance is particularly critical, especially in areas with harsh environment and changeable climate. Therefore, this paper will focus on the 72 hour corrosion resistance test of metallized glass in the salt spray box, and conduct performance analysis, in order to provide data support and theoretical basis for the practical application of metallized glass.

1. Basic properties and advantages of metallized glass

Metallized glass, as its name implies, is a material composed of metal and glass. It is usually composed of metal (such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, etc.) and oxide glass (such as silicon dioxide), which are rapidly cooled in the molten state. The special structure of this material makes it have comprehensive advantages that traditional metal and glass do not have:

  • High strength and hardness : The atomic structure of metallized glass is disorderly arranged, which makes it have high compressive strength and hardness;
  • Excellent corrosion resistance : It has strong chemical stability and excellent corrosion resistance in various chemical media;
  • Low coefficient of thermal expansion : Its thermal expansion coefficient is smaller than that of traditional metal, and it is suitable for working environment under extreme temperature conditions.

2. Background and significance of salt spray test

Salt spray test is an important experimental method to evaluate the corrosion resistance of metal materials. The corrosion rate and durability of materials under long-term exposure were tested by simulating the salt fog environment in the marine climate. This kind of test has been widely used in the design and quality control of automobile, electronic equipment shell and aerospace components. For metallized glass, salt spray test is particularly important because it will directly affect its application feasibility in harsh environments.

3. Test process of metallized glass in salt spray box

In this experiment, we selected a typical metallized glass sample to test its corrosion resistance in the salt spray box for 72 hours. The test steps are as follows:

  • stores reserve : Select a metallized glass sample with a diameter of 50mm and a thickness of 5mm, and conduct salt spray test after surface treatment.
  • Salt mist box setting : The temperature of the salt spray box is set to 35 ° C, the relative humidity is 95%, and the salt solution concentration is 5% NaCl solution.
  • Experiment period : The test time is 72 hours, and the observation record of sample surface corrosion is conducted every 12 hours.

4. Experimental results and analysis

During the 72 hour salt spray test, the surface of the metallized glass sample showed different degrees of corrosion. Specifically

  • Initial stage (within 12 hours) : The sample surface presents a slight passivation layer, and the corrosion phenomenon is not obvious. At this time, the metallized glass shows good corrosion resistance.
  • Medium term (24-48 hours) : The surface corrosion degree gradually deepened, and slight spot corrosion appeared locally, but the overall structure was still stable. The corrosion rate in some areas has accelerated, indicating that there may be minor structural defects in some specific areas.
  • End stage (after 72 hours) : The sample surface has obvious corrosion traces, and the edge of the corrosion area shows traces of metal ions dissolution. The overall corrosion depth is shallow, but the corrosion resistance of the metallized glass can still be maintained at a certain level.

5. Conclusion and application prospect

From the experimental results, the corrosion resistance of metallized glass in salt spray environment is superior to that of traditional metal materials. Although local corrosion occurred after 72 hours of salt spray test, the overall structure is stable and the corrosion depth is shallow. This shows that the metallized glass has a broad application prospect in harsh environments, especially in the automotive shell, external protection of electronic equipment and aerospace fields.

However, the experiment also revealed that metallized glass may have certain corrosion resistance weaknesses in some details, such as micro defects may become the source of corrosion. Therefore, in the future research, how to further optimize the production process of metallized glass, reduce the defect rate and improve the overall corrosion resistance will be an important direction to improve its performance.
